Transportation Meeting: The Houston-Galveston Area Council of Governments is in the process of planning transportation projects to serve their 13-county area during the next 25 years. Among the cities that will host a series of public meetings on what is called the 2045 Regional Transportation Plan is Liberty. H-GAC’s Transportation 101 Public Meeting in Liberty will be Tuesday, January 29, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Liberty Center at City Hall. A panel of experts will discuss projects in the long-range planning phase, future air quality issues and traffic conformity. The public is encouraged to attend and provide comments. Nearly $920 million in funding, including federal, state and local match, has been authorized for regional projects.
LISD Ed Foundation: The Liberty ISD Education Foundation has received an endowed gift of $50,000 in support of LISD teachers and students from the Miles Foundation in honor and memory of Ellison Miles. The Liberty ISD Education Foundation was established in 2007 with the aid of the Miles Foundation. The local non-profit funds innovative teaching ideas on the district’s four campuses. It works in conjunction with, but remains independent of, the Liberty school district. Ellison Miles was born on May 6, 1918, in Liberty. He loved his hometown and was pleased to support education and learning through his own foundation. Since it’s inception in 2007, the Liberty ISD Education Foundation has provided teachers nearly $200,000 in classroom grants. For info, call Bruce Wright at 936-641-0367.
Brotherhood Banquet: Mark your calendars – the 93rd Annual Men’s Brotherhood Banquet at First United Methodist Church of Liberty is set for Thursday, February 21, at 7 p.m. in Fellowship Hall. This year’s keynote speaker is Don Piper, known to many as “The Minister of Hope”. He is author of the best-selling book “90 Minutes in Heaven”. Tickets for the traditional turkey and dressing banquet are $10 and available from any member of the Methodist Men’s Bible Class and from the church office.
