Injury to a Child: A Liberty County man who works as a teacher and coach at New Caney ISD has been arrested for injury to a child. Liberty County Sheriff’s Captain Ken DeFoor said, acting on information that adopted brothers were being physically abused, Liberty County Sheriff’s Cpl. Sean Mitchell arrested 27-year-old Joshua Eugene Bruce last Thursday at the New Caney school district. According to Cpl. Mitchell, Joshua Bruce and his wife served as foster parents prior to adopting the young brothers – ages 3 and 5 - in October. The local man was placed in Liberty County Jail on a charge of Injury to a Child while Cpl. Mitchell continues the investigation. Joshua Bruce has since been released after posting a $20,000 bond.
Property Tax Deadline: Each year, property owners have until close of business January 31 to pay property taxes without facing a penalty. However, Liberty County Tax Collector Ricky Brown says some people may prefer to pay earlier by December 31 to include the expense on their 2018 federal tax returns. The main tax office is on the first floor - Travis Street side - of the Liberty County Courthouse. The Cleveland Annex is located at 304 Campbell Street while the County Annex in Dayton is on FM 1960. All three offices are open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and then from 1 till 4:30. The tax office will be closed next Monday and Tuesday for the Christmas holiday and again on Tuesday, January 1, for New Year’s. For more information, call the tax office at 936-336-4636.
All-District 10-4A Football: Ten Liberty Panthers and seven Hardin-Jefferson Hawks have been named to the All-District 10-4A football first and second teams. Two Liberty players landed a spot on both offense and defense. Now get this - Liberty senior JJ Slack was selected by the district’s coaches as Most Valuable Player in District 10-4A. Panther senior Jeremiah Guillory was first team offense as a running back and first team defense at safety. Liberty Senior Keegan Turner was chosen first team on defense as an inside linebacker but also second team on offense as a running back.
Find Santa: The ‘Find Santa’ game continues through next Monday on KSHN FM 99.9. Yesterday, Elisha Lemelle of Dayton was the latest winner. She found the jolly elf shopping at Big Frank’s BBQ to win $160. Total given away so far is $410.
