Claunch Agreement: We reported Liberty City Council met last Thursday to approve a separation agreement with the city’s chief of police of the past three years, Thomas Claunch. This came after Claunch had been placed on paid administrative leave for unspecified allegations. The separation agreement offers no insight into those complaints but does show details of Claunch’s retirement. The agreement says Claunch’s retirement is completely voluntary and will be effective Feb. 13, 2019. The city will, according to the agreement, keep Claunch on paid administrative leave until then. He will receive his full salary and benefits during that time period. After his retirement, Claunch will be paid for his accrued vacation and birthday time. Under the agreement, Thomas Claunch cannot bring any sort of legal action against the city of Liberty and neither side - Claunch nor the City of Liberty - can engage in any false, negative, critical or disparaging statements about the other.
Online Shopping: Experts say more people than ever will be doing their shopping online this holiday season, and the Better Business Bureau is urging caution in all internet buying. Liz Fredrichs, president of the BBB of Southeast Texas, said there are always more dangers in buying online because, most of the time, the consumer does not know the seller and can not see the actual product they are buying. There is no cost to contact the Better Business Bureau for information on an online company before buying from them. Go to or call the Beaumont office at 409-835-5951.
FLNB Open House: First Liberty National Bank invites the community to a Christmas Open House tomorrow from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Liberty location on the corner of Sam Houston and Travis streets. It will be an evening filled with holiday cheer and musical entertainment. Santa Claus will be there for free pictures. Also making appearances are Mrs. Claus and the Grinch. There will also be light refreshments. For those who would like, you can bring an unwrapped toy for the Liberty County Child Welfare Board to help local fostered youth.
Obituaries: Michael Hale Johnston 71, of Bellaire - formerly of Hull-Daisetta. Service is noon today in Earthman Bellaire FH. Graveside is 1 p.m. Thursday in Guedry Cemetery in Batson.
