Scam Warning: Liberty police are warning residents of telephone scammers pretending to be with the Internal Revenue Service. Liberty Police Chief Thomas Claunch said these scammers are demanding payment for past due income taxes and threatening arrest by the Liberty Police Department. First, the Liberty PD does not make an arrest like the scammers describe. Secondly, as for scams involving the IRS, remember that federal agency does not call or email. Instead, they make their contact through the U.S. mail. If you are contacted by someone claiming to be with the IRS or a company you do business with, hang up the phone. Then experts say to call back using a phone number from your own records for that business or government agency. Liberty residents who receive one of these scam IRS phone calls are asked to report it to Liberty PD by calling 936-336-5666.
Medicare Cards: Medicare participants who have not yet received a new Medicare card are reminded to be patient. The period during which the new cards should be arriving in the mail continues until April 2019. The reason Medicare is moving to replace all identification cards is to phase out use of a person’s Social Security number on the current cards. Since thieves use a person’s SS number to steal their identity, experts advise keeping Social Security cards in a safe place. However, some people are generally required to carry their Medicare cards with them and Medicare cards also have either the cardholder’s Social Security number or their spouse’s number. So, Medicare is discontinuing use of the SS number as identification.
Tony Munson Invitational: More than 1,000 cross country runners are signed up for this Saturday’s 35th Annual Tony Munson Invitational in Liberty Municipal Park. The meet starts at 8 a.m. and continues until conclusion around noon. Anyone interested in volunteering to help at this cross country meet is invited to show up at Liberty Municipal Park around 7:15 Saturday morning - just look for the big tent between the softball fields and the covered basketball pavilion.
Obituaries: Agnus “Aggie” Erdean Zilch, 93, of Anahuac. Service is 11 a.m. Friday at Sterling Funeral Home of Anahuac. Herman Louis LaChapelle, 81, of Raywood. Service is 11 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church (AFS).
