County Budget: Liberty County commissioners approved the 2019 Fiscal Year budget during yesterday’s regular meeting. The 2019 budget begins on October 1 of this year and runs through September 30, 2019. The adopted tax rate is 57.88 cents per $100 in property valuation. That is unchanged from 2018. However, because of an increase in property values countywide, the tax rate will allow the county to take in $2.13 million more in revenue when compared to the 2018 budget. The newly adopted balanced budget calls for General Fund spending and revenues of $35.276 million. That is up 6.32% from the 2018 budget. The county’s 2019 Fiscal Year budget also includes a pay raise for commissioners and other elected officials.
Dayton’s Interim Chief: Dayton City Council met Monday and swore in an interim police chief. We reported the city had contracted with the Texas First Group Municipal Search Firm for someone to fill in following the retirement of longtime Dayton Police Chief John Headrick. Texas First has brought in Charles Wedemeyer to serve as Dayton’s interim chief while the firm works with Dayton City Council to find a new permanent chief. Mr. Wedemeyer has had a long career in law enforcement. He served for 30 years with the Harris County Sheriff’s Department before taking the reins as chief of police for Jersey Village. He retired from that position after 14 years and has been serving as an interim police chief at various municipalities since.
