New Liberty City Manager: Liberty City Council met for more than three hours Wednesday, most of that time in closed-door executive session interviewing the three finalists for Liberty city manager. Following those interviews, Liberty council voted to promote longtime Public Works Director Tom Warner to the job of city manager, effective yesterday. He will serve as the permanent replacement for the retired Gary Broz. Mayor Carl Pickett said he felt Tom Warner would do an excellent job for the city, citing his leadership skills, education and engineering background as just a few of the positive qualities Mr. Warner will bring to the job of city manager. Tom Warner has worked for the city as public works director for roughly the past six years. Mayor Pickett said Mr. Warner’s new salary as city manager is $125,000 a year plus benefits and a car allowance.
Football: The high school football season kicks off tonight for local teams. Liberty is on the road taking on Huffman-Hargrave with kickoff at 7 p.m. Dayton is home facing Friendswood with a 7:30 start time. Hull-Daisetta is on the road in Burkeville beginning at 7:30. Hardin is home taking on Beaumont Legacy at 7:30. Barbers Hill faces Magnolia at 7:30 in Mont Belvieu. Listen live at – just click on your team’s logo at the bottom of our homepage. Longhorns: The University of Texas Longhorns football season opens Saturday on the road. The Longhorns travel to FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland to face the Maryland Terrapins. Pre-Game on All Nine Sports is 10 a.m. tomorrow with kickoff at 11 o’clock. Join the Mid-Morning Report of the news early at 9:30 a.m. followed by the Longhorns game. The NFL Houston Texans kick off their season a week from Sunday, Sept. 9.
