Liberty Suing Hardin, Ames: At Tuesday’s meeting, Liberty city officials publically acknowledged the city has filed a lawsuit against the cities of Hardin and Ames over wastewater issues. Hardin and Ames contract with Liberty for wastewater treatment. Serious problems in the Hardin and Ames sewer systems have led to major rainwater infiltration. Each city contracts with Liberty for treatment of 200,000 gallons per day. Liberty city officials say that increased wastewater flow from Hardin and Ames into Liberty’s wastewater treatment is putting enormous stress on that system. Overage costs have also continued to rise. The lawsuit filed in the 75th District Court of Judge Mark Morefield seeks to recover money owed to Liberty by Hardin and Ames as well as attorney fees and court costs.
Oil Tank Fire: Lightning is blamed for starting an oil tank fire in Hardin Wednesday morning. Residents who live near the oil storage tanks on FM 1011 at FM 834 in Hardin told firefighters they heard a loud thunder clap at around 10:10 a.m. Wednesday. The lightning strike apparently ignited oil in one tank then quickly spread to two other adjacent tanks. Firefighters from Hardin, Liberty and Hull-Daisetta as well as a Liberty County Haz-Mat crew battled the oil tank fire for approximately an hour and a half. Hull-Daisetta Volunteer Fire Chief Memo Gomez said there were no injuries. The oil tank fire on FM 1011 at FM 834 in Hardin was reported to be under control and mostly extinguished by around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.
