TEA Ratings: Texas Education Agency has released its annual accountability ratings for school districts across the state. The 2017-18 rating system has been revamped, and school districts now receive a grade of A thru F. The overall grade is based on performance in three different areas, including ‘Student Achievement’ and ‘School Progress’. The final category is ‘Closing the Gaps’ and it measures how well different student population groups are performing. An important note - all school districts in a county that was declared a disaster area following Hurricane Harvey did not receive an overall grade, unless that district specifically requested it. Two local districts received A’s overall – those are Barbers Hill and Devers ISD. Hardin received an overall C rating. The other seven districts in Liberty and Chambers counties were not given an overall rating because of Hurricane Harvey. However, we can report that Anahuac ISD received B’s in each of the three categories. East Chambers got two Bs and a C while Hull-Daisetta had two Cs and one B. Both the Liberty and Tarkington school districts had Cs in the three measurement categories. Dayton ISD got two Cs and one D while the Cleveland school district had two Ds and one C.
Liberty Tax Rate: Liberty City Council met Tuesday and set the dates for public hearings on the city’s proposed 2018-19 Fiscal Year Budget and Tax Rate. Council approved lowering the city’s property tax rate from the current 61 cents per $100 of assessed property value down to 58.5 cents per $100 of value. The proposed budget for the city of Liberty for the next fiscal year is $38.1 million. The two required public hearings on Liberty’s proposed tax rate are at 6 p.m. on both Tuesday, August 28, and Tuesday, September 11.
Huckabay to Retire: Hull-Daisetta ISD Superintendent Mary Huckabay said she is going to retire at the end of the school year after what will be 11 years with the district. Mrs. Huckabay said her years at Hull-Daisetta have been wonderful, but it is time to retire and spend more time with her already retired husband.
