Speed Limit Change: Liberty City Council met Tuesday and passed an ordinance approving a lower speed limit on what has been described as the unsafe curve on SH 146 North. We’ve reported Liberty council had been pressing Texas Department of Transportation for more than a year about lowering the speed limit on Hwy 146 where it curves in front of North Main Baptist Church and the entrance road to the Featherstone Subdivision, just south of the church. Tuesday, Liberty Mayor Carl Pickett presented council with a letter from TxDOT approving lower speed limits from the north city limits on SH 146 south to the Hwy 146 Bypass. Liberty City Council added their stamp of approval to the new speed limits, which lowers the current 60 mph limit from the north city limits south to Mizell Road down to 50 mph. From Mizell Road south to the 146 Bypass, the speed limit drops from 55 to 45 mph. No time frame was given on changing the current signage on that portion of Hwy 146.
Rubit’s Van: Good news – the van belonging to Ronnie Rubit has been located. Ronnie Rubit is the former Liberty Panther who was paralyzed back in 1976 while playing football for the Lamar Cardinals. Earlier this week, we reported that Rubit’s handicap accessible van went missing from his apartment complex in Houston. That came within hours of friends returning the van after they arranged to have the vehicle’s special wheelchair lift repaired. Ronnie checked with authorities to see if the van had been towed, and after being told it hadn’t, the van was reported stolen. His former Liberty High School teammate and great friend, Robert Ward, said now it appears the van wasn’t stolen after all. Instead, it is believed the van was mistakenly towed. The handicap accessible vehicle is now back at Ronnie’s apartment complex in working order.
Meet the Teacher: The Liberty school district is inviting parents and students of San Jacinto Elementary and Liberty Elementary School to Meet the Teacher events on August 14. Then, San Jacinto Elementary, for pre-kindergarten through first grade, will have an Open House August 14 from 6 to 7 p.m. SJE is at 1629 Grand Avenue across from the district administration building. School starts Thursday, August 16.
