Dayton Health Plan: Dayton City Council met Monday and heard a presentation from the city’s insurance advisor service, IPS. The presentation was on purchasing employee health benefits for the coming fiscal year. IPS’s Julian Fontana recommended Dayton City Council stay with their current employee benefits provider BlueCross BlueShield of Texas. Mr. Fontana said renewing the city’s coverage with BlueCross BlueShield would mean an approximately 5% increase over the current health care premiums. Dayton council followed that recommendation and renewed their contract with BlueCross BlueShield for employee health benefits and also renewed their contract with the Lincoln Financial Company for employee dental and life insurance coverage. Dayton council will discuss how much of the 5% premium increase will be born by the city and how much will be passed on to employees in the form of co-pay at a budget workshop scheduled for August 8.
Emergency Management Change: Liberty County has a new emergency management coordinator. We’ve reported Tom Branch has held that position for the past 10 years and retired from the post yesterday. Mr. Branch said his deputy coordinator, Crista Beasley, is now the county’s new emergency management coordinator. During his decade on the job, Tom Branch and his staff have coordinated county efforts related to two hurricanes, the Daisetta sinkhole, multiple flood events, West Nile Virus and H1N1 influenza, just to name a few.
Scholarships: Seven Dayton High School students have received scholarships from the Dayton Chamber of Commerce Junior Ambassador Program. This program is for volunteers from DHS and serves as an introduction to the business community by working with the Dayton Chamber. Recipients of these Junior Ambassador Scholarships - for $500 each - are Mia Castillo, Desiree Gonzales, Abby Howeth, Isabella Jauergui, Alan Nguyen, Alyssa Sjolander and Jake Torres.
Sales Tax Holiday: The very popular annual back-to-school sales tax holiday is now less than two weeks away. It’s Friday through Sunday, August 10-12. Lists of apparel and school supplies that are tax-free can be found on the Texas comptroller’s website - link there from
