Liberty Council: At Tuesday’s Liberty City Council meeting, the discussion of appointing someone to replace former City Manager Gary Broz on the Sam Rayburn Municipal Power Agency Board of Directors became argumentative. Council member Libby Simonson nominated former Liberty mayor and SRMPA board member Bruce Halstead to that seat. Other council members said they preferred appointing the next permanent city manager instead. Also, Liberty Mayor Carl Pickett said Bruce Halstead “has not been a friend to the agency” since his retirement from it. The vote was 5 to 2 against Halstead’s appointment with Libby Simonson and Paul Glazener voting in favor and Mayor Pickett, Diane Huddleston, Dennis Beasley, David Arnold and Chipper Smith voting “no”.

Champion Lake Remains Closed: We have reported a large culvert damaged by Hurricane Harvey flood waters has resulted in the closure of the only access road to the Champion Lake Public Use Area south of Dayton. Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge Manager Stuart Marcus said the process that will lead to repairs of the now unsafe culvert is moving forward, although not very fast. If all goes well, the flood damaged culvert can be replaced and the access road to the public use area reopened by year’s end. Mr. Marcus said the next step is getting a design plan for the project approved. For information, call the refuge office in Liberty at 936-336-9786.
