Dayton Man Sentenced: James Monroe Foster of Dayton has been sentenced to 99 years in prison for the Continuous Sexual Abuse of a Child spanning more than six years. Liberty County DA Logan Pickett said the now 46-year-old man treated his own relatives to unspeakable neglect and near constant sexual abuse. Foster’s trial was last week in the 75th District Court of Judge Mark Morefield. He is not eligible for parole.
Liberty’s Fireworks Extravaganza: The City of Liberty’s Independence Day family celebration is held annually on the evening of July 3. That means the skies over Liberty will light up tomorrow night in celebration of our nation’s Declaration of Independence. Festivities begin at 6 p.m. tomorrow with activities for the kids. Starting at 7 there will be live music from Jason West and West of the Trinity Band, and at 9 p.m. emcee Liberty Municipal Judge Mike Little will welcome those attending. There will be an invocation, the pledge of allegiance to the American and Texas flags, and brief remarks. Then, around 9:15 comes the big fireworks display presented by the Pyrotechnico company. Once again, KSHN will broadcast musical accompaniment for the fireworks extravaganza.
Tax Deadline: The official deadline for property owners to pay any remaining 2017 property taxes without incurring attorney collection costs is today. Liberty County Tax Assessor Collector Ricky Brown said even paying a portion of property taxes owed could save taxpayers a substantial amount of money. His offices in the Courthouse in Liberty and the annexes in Dayton and Cleveland are open until 4:30 p.m. today. In addition, taxpayers can make payment online. The deadline for that is midnight. You can access the Liberty County tax office’s website from For info, call the Liberty tax office 936-336-4633.
High Heat Index Today: The National Weather Service is warning of extreme heat and humidity levels today that could lead to dangerous outdoor conditions. Forecasters predict a heat index value of 106 degrees today. The heat index is the projected affect on the human body exposed to the combination of temperature and humidity. If outdoor activities are planned, take regular breaks and drink plenty of water. Do not leave children or pets in a closed vehicle - not even for a minute.
