Refuge Trails: It’s a great local treasure for outdoor enthusiasts. The Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge has three hiking trails easily accessible in the city of Liberty. Refuge Biologist Laurie Lomas Gonzales said the trails are part of what’s called the “From Crosswalks to Boardwalks” project. The Knobby Knees Trail connects on the backside of Liberty Municipal Park. The Great Egret’s Ridge Trial starts at the end of Ohio Street, and the Tree Frog Trail begins at the end of Cypress Street. Each trail is open daily from sunrise to sunset, except during flood events. Remember, the trails are primitive, so snakes and critters abound. For details and maps, go online to the Trinity River Refuge’s website – link there from our homepage at kshn.com.
