Dayton Tax Rollback Refunds: We have reported on the May 5th Special Election in the City of Dayton – prompted by a citizen petition - to lower the city’s property tax rate. The measure passed, and as required, the Dayton City Council has lowered the city’s property tax rate from 67 cents per $100 of assessed property value to 65.5 cents per $100. Liberty County Tax Assessor/Collector Ricky Brown said, at this point, around 95 percent of Dayton taxpayers have already paid their 2017 property taxes. That means many - though not all - will receive tax refund checks from the county tax office. He said those tax refund checks are expected to be mailed out by July 1.
County Contract Dispute: Liberty County commissioners spent more than two hours in session yesterday on a lengthy agenda. One item caused a brief adjournment into executive session to discuss a contract the county entered into with the Way Company back in January 2014. That business upgraded many of the heating and air-conditioning systems at county-owned buildings. As a part of the $3.7 million contract, the county was guaranteed that a savings in their monthly utility bills would be accomplished. The contract also called for the Way Company to annually provide proof of those savings to the county. According to estimates at the time of the original contract, through 2029 the county was expected to see a net savings of $4.6 million. For at least that past two years, despite efforts from county officials, those designated documents have not been delivered to the county. Following yesterday’s executive session, commissioners voted to cancel the contract effective immediately.
