Lady Panthers: The Liberty Lady Panthers face the Jones Lady Trojans of Beeville in a state semifinal matchup tomorrow at 9 a.m. in Austin. The winner advances to the state title game at noon Saturday. This will be the first appearance in the state tournament for the Liberty girls while Beeville Jones has been there two times before. One of those trips was last year when they lost in the semifinals. The Lady Panthers enter tomorrow’s game sporting a 29-13 record while the Lady Trojans are 36-2 overall. The two starting pitchers for Beeville Jones are seniors, and each has only one loss this season. They’ve combined to hold their opponents scoreless 31 times and have only given up 11 runs all season. Liberty ninth-grader Kaci West is the star hurler for the Lady Panthers with a 27-8 record on the mound. Liberty has held its opponents scoreless 11 times this year. Fan Buses: Liberty ISD is providing two buses to Austin tomorrow morning for employees and community members who would like to attend the girls' softball state semifinal game. Buses will be at the stadium parking lot, idling with A/C running, for a 4:30 a.m. departure tomorrow. The roundtrip is at no charge.
Sam Center: The public is invited to the grand reopening of the now fully renovated Sam Houston Library and Research Center Museum on Saturday, June 9. The center is located on FM 1011 in far north Liberty. In addition to a display of valuable artifacts from the pre-history of what was once was the Atascocito District, the new museum gallery features exhibits from more recent times as well. For details, call the center at 936-336-8821.
Purse Bingo Sponsors: There are still sponsorships available for the Bridgehaven Children’s Advocacy Center’s big Purse Bingo fundraiser set for July 20-21 at the Dayton Community Center. In recent years, Purse Bingo has grown in popularity so much that it is now a two night event. It mixes bingo with designer purse prizes, and all proceeds benefit the Bridgehaven’s efforts to help abused children in Liberty and Chambers counties. Purse Bingo is completely sold out, but there are sponsorships still available that entitle some sponsors to event tickets. For information, call Bridgehaven at 936-258-0400.
Obituaries: John Wayne Jackson, 70, of Liberty. Service is 2 p.m. Thursday at Faith & Family in Batson.
