Hurricane Prep - Insurance: Hurricane season begins Friday, June 1, and continues through Nov. 30. That means now is the time to consider your insurance needs. Dayton insurance agent Steven Skarpa said it takes 30 days from purchase for flood insurance to go into effect. As for property and casualty coverage for wind and storm damage, it goes into effect when it’s bound or accepted by the agent. However, insurance companies generally will not write new coverage or make changes to existing policies in Texas whenever a named storm or tropical disturbance enters or even threatens the Gulf of Mexico. Also, insurance companies do not write auto coverage when there is a watch or warning. These rules affect those living in any coastal county or county that adjoins it. The writing of insurance coverage resumes when the threat has ended.
Liberty Drainage: The major two-part construction project to repair the city of Liberty’s main drainage ditch and the city’s levee is nearing completion. That work is a cooperative effort by the City of Liberty, WCID #5 and the LCDC. Liberty City Manager Gary Broz explains, while that roughly $3 million project is nearing completion, another area has been identified as needing work – this time on the Main B drainage ditch. The city has hired the Freese-Nichols engineering firm to perform a study on the 421 feet of the earthen embankment along Main B across from Liberty Elementary School that is showing signs of sloughing down the slope due to repeated periodic flooding.
Softball Playoffs: Both the Dayton and Liberty girls’ softball teams have advanced to the Regional Semifinals of the state playoffs. The Lady Panthers face Robinson in a best-of-three series at neutral site Madisonville. Game 1 is Thursday at 8 p.m. Game two is Friday at 6 p.m., and if Game 3 is needed, it will follow Friday. As for Dayton, the Lady Broncos take on Elgin in a best-of-three series at neutral site Magnolia West High School. Game 1 is Friday at 7 p.m. Game 2 is Saturday at 4 p.m. followed by Game 3 if necessary. KSHN FM 99.9 will broadcast the Liberty Lady Panthers Game 1 on Thursday with that 8 p.m. start time. Then on Friday we will bring you the Dayton Lady Broncos Game 1 beginning at 7 p.m. We are unable to do any games on Saturday this week since we have a long-time commitment to broadcast the Liberty-Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce Radio Day from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
