Dayton Seeks FEMA Grants: With damages to infrastructure in Dayton from Hurricane Harvey now approaching $3 million, city officials and staff continue to work with the Federal Emergency Management Agency for recovery reimbursement. Dayton City Manager Theo Melancon said the city is also applying for what are called Emergency Mitigation Grants from FEMA to take preventative measures to prepare for future such disasters. He said that grant money could help the city deal with 17 separate sites identified for drainage improvements so the city could be ready before another major flood event like Harvey.
Dayton FFA Livestock Show: The 69th Annual Dayton FFA Livestock Show and Rodeo is next Wednesday through Saturday, May 16-19, at the Anson Rigby Memorial Arena on Hwy 321 in Dayton. It all leads up to the big youth livestock auction on Saturday, May 19. The Dayton Young Farmers Barbecue gets underway at 11 a.m. followed by the auction at 12:30 that Saturday afternoon. Remember, a minimum $100 donation to the Dayton FFA 100 Club entitles members to a chance at winning one of the animals purchased by the 100 Club in a drawing held after the auction. Camp Invention: Camp Invention in Liberty is set for July 9-13 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day at San Jacinto Elementary. The camp is an enhancement program for elementary students who are entering kindergarten through sixth grade. Tax Holiday: Mark your calendars - the annual Energy Star sales tax free weekend begins Saturday, May 26, and continues through Monday, May 28. During that three-day period, Texans will get a break from state and local sales and use taxes when they purchase certain energy-efficient products.
