Liberty City Manager Search: Liberty City Council met Tuesday and voted to hire Texas First Group to find an interim city manager to replace the retiring Gary Broz. Texas First Group is the municipal management search company that recently conducted the city manager search for Dayton that led to that city hiring Theo Melancon. The city of Liberty has also used Texas First Group in the past.
Main Street Road Work: Portions of Main Street in Liberty will be closed nightly starting Monday for a Texas Department of Transportation street overlay project. Crews will mill off the top layer of pavement and then replace it with a fresh surface while also making any needed repairs to the base. Crews will be working on Main Street between Grand Avenue and the Hwy 146 bypass for about two months. Then they will move to FM 563 and conduct the same type of work south of Highway 90 to Loblolly Lane at the south end of the TVE property. The mill work on Main Street in Liberty begins Monday, with road closures nightly between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. until about mid-July.
LHS Academic Decathlon: After a few years absence, Liberty High School's Academic Decathlon Team resumed competition this year and promptly advanced to both the State UIL Finals and a national online competition. LHS finished sixth in the state’s small school division. Now comes word the Panthers Academic Decathlon Team placed seventh in that national online competition with one of the team’s members, Kaleb Zick, finishing in second place nationally in mathematics.
Choral Performance: High school choirs from Liberty, Nederland and Vidor will present two performances of American composer Dan Forrest’s work titled Requiem for the Living. They will be joined by professional instrumentalists under the direction of Dr. Robert Horton. The first concert is Saturday at 3 p.m. in Liberty’s First Baptist Church, 602 Main Street. The second will follow at 7 p.m. Saturday at Beaumont’s First United Methodist Church, 701 Calder Avenue.
