New Liberty Policy: Liberty City Council met Tuesday and adopted a new policy governing appointment of members to the city’s volunteer boards and commissions. In the past, several members of Liberty City Council expressed displeasure with the number of volunteers who agree to serve on entities such as the Planning and Zoning Commission or the Airport Advisory Board and then, for whatever reason, do not actually attend any of those board meetings. The new policy approved by Liberty City Council establishes an application process prospective volunteer board members must go through in order to be approved to serve. The new policy includes a stipulation that citizen advisory board members must attend at least 75 percent of the meetings for whatever board or commission to which they are appointed. Liberty Councilman Louie Potetz cast the lone no vote, saying the new policy would discourage citizens from participating.
Detwiler Foundation: Organizers are encouraging you to make plans to attend the Shane Detwiler BBQ Cook-off and Car Show set for Saturday, April 28. The festivities start at 9 a.m. that day in the parking lot at Liberty City Hall. The barbecue competition has four categories – brisket, ribs, chicken and chili. They will also be selling barbecue plates for $10. In addition, there is a gun raffle with tickets costing $10 each or three for $20. All proceeds benefit the Shane Detwiler Foundation established in honor of Chambers County Deputy Detwiler who was killed in the line of duty back in 2009. To signup or for more information, call Cheryl Railsback at 832-556-9760. You can also learn more online at
Trail Ride: Due to expected rain, the congregation of Line Camp Cowboy Church has rescheduled their second Spring Trail Ride until Saturday May 19th. Everyone is still invited to bring their horse and participate in this free ride. There will be hay wagons for non-riders. The start time is the same. Riders meet at 10:30 that Saturday morning at the future permanent home of the church – the address is 711 Highway 90 in Devers. All horses must have a negative coggins test. Following the 10-mile ride on May 19th, the Line Camp Cowboy Church Chuck Wagon Team will serve dinner. It’s free to one and all. For information, go online to the church’s website at
