Relay for Life: The Liberty County Relay for Life committee and participants have done it again. Longtime volunteer Sandra Sterling said this year’s 18th annual relay raised nearly $65,000 with more expected to trickle in during the next few days. That brings the total raised for the American Cancer Society – just in South Liberty County since the first local event back in 2001 – to about $1.5 million. This year’s fundrasier was moved to the Dayton High School gym because of rains that covered the field and track in water at Liberty Memorial Stadium, but that didn’t dampen the spirits of all involved. If you still want to make a donation to this very special effort, call Chair Bonnie Campisi at 409-267-7119 or Sandra Sterling at 936-336-3716.

Child Pornography Investigation: We’ve reported a Dayton ISD Richter Elementary School teacher and Boy Scouts leader is facing child pornography charges after a search warrant was served on his Harris County home and at the Dayton school campus. The Harris County Pct. 4 Constable’s Office arrested 31-year-old Joshua Janecka with five counts of Possession of Child Pornography and one count of Promotion of Child Pornography. In a statement Friday, DISD officials said there is no evidence to suggest any Dayton students are involved. Dayton ISD Superintendent Dr. Jessica Johnson said the district will continue to update parents on any developments they receive through the Harris County investigation. She is also encouraging parents to discuss the situation with their students in an open, honest, and age-appropriate manner. She said if parent’s feel their child needs additional support, counseling referral information is available at each DISD campus.

Anyone with information is asked to call Liberty County Sheriff’s Investigator Annmarie Mitchell at 936-336-4500. Those who wish to remain anonymous can call the Crime Stoppers at 1-800-392-7867.
