Harvey Disaster Assistance: It has now been about seven months since Hurricane Harvey made its way through Southeast Texas, dumping record amounts of rainfall on the region. Since Harvey moved through Texas, 893,557 households in the 41 counties affected by the storm have registered for disaster assistance. As of Tuesday, FEMA has distributed more than $1.597 billion of individual and household aid in the Lone Star State. Here in Liberty County 10,610 have registered for FEMA assistance, and the agency has approved a total of $28.864 million in disaster assistance just here locally. Then, in Chambers County, there are a total of 6,081 registrations, and FEMA has approved $25.325 million in assistance there.

Open House: The community is invited to an open house this Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at the Lee College Education Center - South Liberty County on the Hwy 146 bypass in Liberty. The event includes a preview day of the Kids at College Program, a summer camp program for kids ages 5 to 17. There will also be information for students transitioning from high school to college plus free meningitis vaccinations. They will also offer tours of the facility, located at 1715 Hwy 146 Bypass in Liberty. Following the open house, there will be a presentation on distracted driving, also free. Child Abuse Prevention Month: April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and Bridgehaven Children’s Advocacy Center is working to get the word out that, sadly, child abuse is an issue in Liberty and Chambers counties. In fact, last year, Bridgehaven served 315 children in the two counties involving allegations of child abuse. The group’s mission is to give hope and care to the children of Liberty and Chambers counties who are victims of physical and/or sexual abuse. Among its services, Bridgehaven offers presentations to organizations, including churches, schools and civic groups throughout the two counties. To schedule a program, call 936-258-0400.
