Jubilee Recap: During Tuesday’s Liberty City Council meeting, City Manager Gary Broz gave council members a recap of the just passed 33rd Annual Jubilee. He said last Saturday’s attendance was very good but Friday’s was not. Council Member Louie Potetz said he felt a big problem was that the Jubilee celebration was competing with the Faux Real Trade Days Event held at the TVE fairgrounds on the third weekend of most months, including what is traditionally “Jubilee weekend” in March. He suggested moving the Jubilee next year to another weekend. Liberty Council member Paul Glazener recommended forming a committee to, as he put it, “rebrand and re-launch” the Jubilee to attract a “younger crowd”. Liberty Council agreed to the forming of such a Jubilee re-launch committee, though no action was taken at Tuesday’s meeting.

LISD Cancels Election: The Liberty school board cancelled the district’s May 5th trustee election during Tuesday’s meeting. That unanimous decision came after the LISD board certified there are no contested races. As we’ve reported, only the incumbents signed up to run for office. They include Position 2 trustee and Liberty school board president Bruce Bell along with Position 3 board member and vice president Lance Lawrence. Also unopposed for election is Position 6 trustee Rachel Odell.

From that event, three academic teams advanced to the Regional competition, set for April 14 at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville. Advancing LHS teams are Social Studies, Computer Science and Literary Criticism – each placing first at the District meet.
