Reporting Storm Damage to CAD: Liberty County residents impacted by Hurricane Harvey are urged to call the Central Appraisal District to report damage to their property. Liberty County Director of Property Appraisals Jason Strickland said, if you have not already done so, notify the Liberty CAD of your damages - large or small - so your property can be appraised at whatever its value was on January 1, 2018. Just call the appraisal district with your name, property location and the type of damage. Those phone numbers – in Liberty call 936-336-5722, in Cleveland 281-593-1605 or in Dayton 936-257-8395.
Life Sentence: A 59-year-old Dayton man with a long criminal history has been sentenced to life in prison for his latest conviction – this time on the charge of Evading Arrest or Detention. Billy Wayne Gilliland was found guilty by a jury in the 253rd District Court of Judge Chap Cain back in late February. Court testimony shows Gilliland has a lengthy criminal history, including two prison stints for burglary of a habitation. He also spent time in jail for delivery of methamphetamine as well as escape. Then in 1988, Billy Gilliland was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of David Lee Reid. He was once again paroled in 2015 after serving nearly 27 years of his life sentence. Now, Billy Gilliland has once again been sentenced to life in prison - this time for Evading Arrest or Detention.
Police Seek Info on Cash: Liberty Police Department would like to talk with anyone who has information about several hundred dollars seized from a man who fled police back in August 2017. Lt. Chip Fairchild said, at that time, police got a tip about suspicious activity, which ended with a male fleeing from officers on a motorcycle. At some point, the man ditched the motorcycle and got away on foot. Next to the motorcycle, police found several hundred dollars in cash. Anyone with information on the money is asked to call Liberty police at 936-336-5666. If someone can establish a legal claim to ownership of the seized money, it may be returned to them.
Obituaries: Dorothy Jean Morris Charles, 88, of Prairie View, formerly of Ames. Service is 10 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church (WFS).
