City of Liberty & Magnolia Ridge: Liberty City Council has approved the purchase of Magnolia Ridge Country Club; however, the deal still needs approval of the club’s membership before it is final. As we’ve reported, the city intends to pay the membership roughly $260,000 for the country club to go toward paying off the club’s outstanding debts. Then, as part of the agreement, Magnolia Ridge Country Club will apply to be voluntarily annexed into Liberty’s city limits. Ross Norwood is president of the Magnolia Ridge Board of Directors. He said falling membership and several other factors have made a municipal takeover of the 119 acre golf facility the best thing to do. If approved by the club’s membership, ownership would transfer to the City of Liberty by June 1. At that point, the club will be renamed the Liberty Municipal Golf Course.

Academic Decathlon: After a few years absence, Liberty High School's Academic Decathlon team resumed competition this year and promptly advanced to the State Finals where they finished sixth in the small school division. The Liberty team has also qualified for the United States Academic Decathlon’s national online contest. LHS Coach Randy Gunter said the contest includes ten events - essay, interview, speech, social science, art, music, science, math, language/literature plus economics. Mr. Gunter said school officials believe that student competition is an important part of challenging the district’s top academic students to face off with the best students from other schools to hone their academic skills.
