Dayton VFD Gets Ladder Truck: Dayton City Council met in special session Saturday to approve the purchase of a used ladder truck for the Dayton Volunteer Fire Department. Dayton City Manager Theo Melancon said the city has needed a ladder truck for some time, but the average cost – around $1.2 million – was prohibitive. However, Mr. Melancon said he became aware the City of Odessa was auctioning off a good used ladder truck. Dayton City Council met in emergency session to authorize the city manager to bid on the 2007 Pierce ladder truck, which the city was able to acquire for $101,500. Dayton volunteer firefighters will take possession of the truck in the next couple of weeks. We are told it will need some repairs and a change of decals before it will be ready for use.
County Commissioners: Commissioners quickly worked through a short agenda yesterday, approving the purchase of three tractor mower combos at a total cost of $330,000. Two of those will go to Precinct 2 of Commissioner Greg Arthur and the other to Precinct 3 of Commissioner Boo Reeves. In other action, commissioners approved moving the one-year contract start date with the AFLAC supplemental insurance coverage from June 1 to July 1. Insurance Agent Jennilea Chase said this one-month difference gives county employees, who choose to purchase that insurance, time to enroll or make any changes to their personal coverage before open enrollment closes.
