Liberty Annexation: Liberty City Council met Tuesday and voted to annex Phase 7 of the city’s ongoing annexation plan of property southeast along the Trinity River. The 1.66 square miles that comprise Phase 7 belong entirely to the U. S. Department of the Interior. The city’s attorney said that agency routinely does not respond to notifications of annexation by local entities and did not respond in this case. Phase 7 was initially said to be the next to last property annexation on the city’s current plan to ultimately bring the Moss Bluff gas storage facility into Liberty’s city limits. However, now council is expected to approve two more annexations before the plan is concluded. Liberty City Council set two required public hearings on Phase 8. That annexation is planned to be .27 square miles. The first public hearing on that annexation is Tuesday, March 20, at noon with the second on Tuesday, March 27, at 6 p.m. Both will be in council chambers at Liberty City Hall.
FM 787 Closed: Texas Department of Transportation reports FM 787 at the Trinity River bridge was closed yesterday morning to allow crews to complete emergency repairs needed due to Hurricane Harvey. That crossing on the far north end of Liberty County is one of three bridges spanning the Trinity River here in county. Drivers could use State Highway 105 as an alternative route. TxDOT reports the FM 787 bridge will reopen next Tuesday, February 20, at 6 a.m.
Free Trees: The Texas A&M Forest Service is giving away free trees tomorrow for homeowners wanting to enhance their landscape. This free, one-day giveaway will take place from 10 a.m. to noon at Liberty Municipal Park. Forest service officials will be set up at the small gazebo near the playground area. The free trees include a variety of oaks. These trees are bare-root seedlings and will need to be planted within a day or two. Planting guidelines and other information will be provided. For information, call 936-336-4558, ext. 2440.
