Jail Contract Renewed: Liberty County Commissioners Court voted to extend the contract between the county and The GEO Group, formerly C.E.C. That’s the private company currently operating the Liberty County Jail. The new contract, which is for two years, begins in October of this year and increases the per-inmate, per-day rate by less than one dollar. Currently the rate is $46.85 with the new rate of $47.79 starting in October.

Sales Tax Collections: The Christmas shopping season was a fairly good one for a number of area retailers. That is evidenced by sales tax collections for November and December in the 10 incorporated cities with retail businesses across Liberty County. Sales tax dollars collected during those two months are delivered to cities in January and February for use in their budgets. According to the Texas comptroller’s office, combined sales tax revenue was up about 5.8 percent countywide for a real dollar total increase in tax collections of $87,664. That means for businesses in those ten towns, taxable sales were up $6.36 million with total retail sales of approximately $108.1 million during the two-month Christmas shopping season.

Brotherhood Banquet: A reminder – the 92nd Annual Men’s Brotherhood Banquet at First United Methodist Church of Liberty is tomorrow at 7 p.m. This year’s keynote speaker is State Senator Robert Nichols of Jacksonville. The local men’s Brotherhood Banquet was first held in 1927 and has continued - without interruption – since then. That makes this storied Liberty gathering the oldest continuously held event of its kind in America. Tickets for the traditional turkey and dressing banquet are $10. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door tomorrow night. For more information, call 936-336-6401.
