Beat ID Theft: The Internal Revenue Service reportedly pays out billions of dollars each year to identity thieves. Local CPA Byron Swaim said the government has been in such a rush in recent years to process tax returns that crooks are using stolen social security numbers to file fake returns and cash refund checks early in the tax season. He said the best way to make sure your income tax refund is not stolen is to file your return as soon as possible, before thieves have a chance to do it first.
