County Judge Debate: The Liberty County Republican Party is hosting a debate with the three candidates for county judge this Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the Cleveland Civic Center on Peach Avenue in Cleveland. The March 6 Republican primary race for county judge features three men who have all held that position. Incumbent Judge Jay Knight of Dayton is challenged by two former county judges – Phil Fitzgerald of Moss Hill and Craig McNair of Dayton. There are no Democrat candidates for county judge. So, this race will be decided in the primary.
Hobbs Update: Here’s an update on a former Liberty resident charged more than six years ago in Harris County with two murders. Steven Alexander Hobbs, who was living in Crosby at the time of his arrest in October 2011, is now set for trial on January 25 of next year, 2019. He remains in the Harris County Jail facing eight different charges, including murder, capital murder, aggravated sexual assault and kidnapping. Those crimes allegedly occurred in the eastern part of Harris County. Court records show Steven Hobbs’ case is set for trial in the 351st District Court of Judge George Powell of Harris County. Steven Hobbs is a former resident of this area and attended Liberty High School in the late 1980s.
Rollback Election: The city of Dayton, as the result of a citizen petition, will hold a Tax Rollback Election on May 5th, in conjunction with the city council election. The rollback election will give Dayton voters a chance to lower their city’s property tax rate from the current adopted rate of 67 cents per $100 of assessed property value down to the rollback rate of 65.5 cents per $100. Dayton City Manager Theo Melancon estimated if the rollback election is successful, Dayton homeowners would save around $14.50 per $100,000 of property value per year.
