Armed Robberies: Liberty police are investigating two armed robberies from over the weekend. The first occurred Friday at 1:10 a.m. at the JJs Chevron at the corner of FM 563 and Highway 90. Police say two robbers entered that convenience store, both dressed in black clothing with masks and gloves. Liberty police are talking with Chambers County Sheriff’s Office and Dayton PD who have worked similar cases during the past month. Then, in a separate armed robbery on Saturday around 1 p.m., Liberty police responded to the Checks Into Cash on Highway 90 at Main Street across from McDonald’s. That robber was said to be a white male wearing a motorcycle helmet, gloves, grey hoody, grey backpack and black pants. Video shows that robber arrived and left on a mini-bike. Anyone with information is asked to call the Liberty PD at 936-336-5666.

Investment Zones: At a recent meeting, the Dayton City Council voted to hire a company called TXP Economic and Public Policy Consultants for advice in creating future economic strategies. TXP’s services include the creation of what are called Tax Increment Reinvestment Zones or TIRZ. These zones are used by municipalities to help fund future infrastructure improvement projects. Dayton City Manager Theo Melancon said these zones will be created in Dayton to help pay for infrastructure development at the rail serving Gulf Inland Logistics Park along Hwy 146 South. He says creation of the Tax Increment Reinvestment Zones will lay the foundation for industrial development at Gulf Inland as well as the downtown revitalization planned for 2019 and beyond.
