Scam Alert: Liberty Police Department is warning local residents about an old scam that has resurfaced. We have reported warnings about crooks who contact folks, usually over the phone, demanding money or their utilities will be cut off. Those kinds of scam calls are reportedly happening again in the city of Liberty. However, yesterday’s report that thieves were trying that scam door-to-door in the city turned out to be a misunderstanding about someone who actually received a phone call from a scammer. The big message - city officials will not call demanding payment under the threat of turning off your service. If you have questions, call City Hall at 936-336-3684.
Reward in Game Warden Assault: Law enforcement officials are asking for the public’s help identifying individuals responsible for injuring a Texas game warden during a traffic stop New Year’s Day. A $10,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to the identification and arrest of those responsible. That incident occurred about 5 p.m. Monday on private property east of Plum Grove Road in Liberty County near the Harris County line. Officials say the game warden was run over while attempting to make contact with a cargo style van. The driver of the vehicle is believed to be a Hispanic male in his 40s or 50s. The passengers are described as two females - one in her 40s or 50s and the other in her teens or 20s. The vehicle of interest is described as a white, late model Ford E350 van featuring windows on the right side access doors. Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call Operation Game Thief at 1-800-792-4253. Callers may remain anonymous.
