Dayton Rollback Election: At their meeting on December 22, the Dayton City Council confirmed the validity of a citizen petition calling for a tax rollback election. They plan to officially call for such an election later this month. Dayton City Manager Theo Melancon said it is likely council will try and hold that tax rollback election at the same time as the Liberty County Primary Elections on March 6th. As we have reported, some residents are seeking a tax rollback election that would allow registered voters in the city the opportunity to lower Dayton’s property tax rate from the current rate of 67 cents per $100 of assessed property value to what is called the rollback rate of 65.5 cents.

Property Taxes: Property owners have until close of business Jan. 31 to pay property taxes without penalty. Liberty County Tax Collector Ricky Brown said, this year, those whose homestead was impacted by Hurricane Harvey can pay in four installment payments without incurring penalty. However, he emphasizes the first payment is still due by the Jan. 31 deadline and arrangements need to be made with the tax office ahead of time. The main tax office is on the first floor of the Liberty County Courthouse. The County Annex in Dayton is on FM 1960 while the Cleveland Annex is located at 304 Campbell Street. For more info, call the tax office at 936-336-4633.
