Child Advocacy: Bridgehaven Children’s Advocacy Center located in Dayton, but serving both Liberty and Chambers Counties, works with law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, and children’s protective services to help minimize the trauma associated with child abuse investigations. Bridgehaven Director Paula Sanchez said when she started with Bridgehaven 10 or so years ago, there were about 30 of this type of agency in the state. There are now, 71 children’s advocacy centers in Texas. Paula Sanchez said prior to the use of advocacy centers, child victims of abuse or neglect might be interviewed over and over, reliving the trauma time and time again. Bridgehaven CAC has helped to change the way child abuse investigations are handled, providing a neutral child-friendly, non institutionalized environment where the victim can feel safe telling their story once, to trained experts. Those experts can be immediately provided to both the child and non-offending family members.
