Eaglin Charges Dismissed: Here’s an update on a former Cornell University basketball player - Xavier Eaglin of Raywood - charged last year as a college freshman with multiple counts of sexual assault against one woman in Ithaca, NY. We have learned those charges were dropped earlier this year. The Ithaca Voice newspaper reported the DA confirmed the case had been dismissed, saying the records were sealed and no longer available to the public. The Tompkins County DA declined to make any other comments on this case. During his senior year for the Dayton Broncos, Xavier Eaglin was named district player of the year and was class valedictorian. Xavier is now playing basketball at a Texas college.

Holiday Hours: Christmas is Monday, and the holiday schedule for local city and county offices will vary some. The Liberty County Courthouse, the city of Liberty and the city of Cleveland offices will be closed both Monday and Tuesday. Those offices will reopen for regular hours Wednesday, Dec. 27. However, the city of Dayton is closed today and will remain closed Monday for Christmas. Dayton City Hall will reopen next Tuesday, Dec. 26. Banks and post offices will be closed on Christmas Day only – that’s next Monday. Garbage service in Liberty, Dayton and Cleveland will not run on Christmas, but regular trash pickup service in those towns will resume Tuesday.

Giving: Before celebrating this season of giving with a donation to a local or national charity, check to make sure they are legitimate and find out how they operate. Southeast Texas Better Business Bureau President Liz Fredricks said some charity organizations - while not technically a scam - may only give a small portion of the money raised for their actual mission. She said if most of a charity’s donations actually go to fund administrative costs for the organization itself, a red flag should go up. To check on a charity, go online to www.give.org.
