Child Death Update: A Liberty County grand jury has issued a no-bill in connection with last year’s death of a 1-year-old boy who was reportedly left inside a vehicle alone all day back on Sept. 15, 2016. That decision means no one will face charges in this case. Dayton police received a report of an unresponsive child inside a vehicle in the parking lot of a Dayton child care center around 6 p.m. that day. When officers arrived, they checked for vital signs and determined the child had passed away. During their preliminary investigation, Dayton police determined the child’s mother, Jodie Kennemer of Dayton, thought she had left her son at daycare before going to work. Ms. Kennemer is the general counsel attorney for the Pasadena school district. At the end of her workday, Jodie Kennemer went back to the Dayton daycare to pick up the 1-year-old child. There the mother discovered she had never dropped off her son in the first place. Again, a Liberty County grand jury has issued a no-bill, meaning there are no indictments in connection with the September 2016 tragic death of the 1-year-old boy.
Property Tax Deadline: Each year, property owners have until close of business Jan. 31 to pay property taxes without penalty. Liberty County Tax Collector Ricky Brown said, this year, there is a special provision that is part of Gov. Greg Abbott’s disaster declaration for Hurricane Harvey. He said that stipulation allows those whose homestead was damaged by the storm to make four installment payments extending past Jan. 31 without penalty. Homeowners with damage must notify the tax office, and the first payment is still due by the Jan. 31 deadline. The main tax office is on the first floor of the Liberty County Courthouse. For more information, call the tax office at 936-336-4633.
