Enrollment Extension: Although the open enrollment period to purchase health insurance as provided for under the Affordable Care Act ended last Friday, there is a special enrollment period for those impacted by recent hurricanes. Best known as “Obamacare”, the Affordable Care Act offers uninsured or underinsured Americans the ability to enroll in healthcare coverage or to renew a plan they may already have. For all those affected by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria, the open enrollment period for Obamacare, as well for Medicare, has been extended through Dec. 31, 2017. The extension allows those living in or who have moved from a hurricane affected area to enroll in a new healthcare plan or make changes to existing plans now through the end of December without paying a fine. To enroll in Medicare under this special enrollment, call toll free 1-800-MEDICARE. For information on choosing a healthcare plan under the Affordable Care Act, call 1-800-318-2596.
