Rice Storage Bin Fire: Firefighters from sixteen departments spent roughly six hours Friday battling a major fire inside one of the American Rice Growers huge rice storage bins on U. S. 90 in Raywood. Liberty County Fire Marshall Bill Hergemueller said a storage bin containing rice ignited and eventually crews cut holes in the side of it to gain better access to the fire. Using suppressant foam, firefighters had the blaze contained and the fire out by 5 p.m. Friday. No one was injured, but the fire is responsible as much as $750,000 damage to rice and the storage bin. American Rice Growers General Manager James “Tinker” Hewitt said the losses are insured. He said American Rice Growers is still fully operational and producers will be paid. Only one of several bins was damaged.

A reminder, the deadline for Democrat and Republican candidates to file for any of the offices on the March 6 Primary ballot is today at 6 p.m.
