Hurricane Season Ends: The 2017 hurricane season is now officially in the books, and it will go down as one of the most active hurricane seasons on record. Of course, Hurricane Harvey will long be remembered for the historic flooding it caused here in Liberty County and throughout the Texas Gulf Coast. The six-month Atlantic hurricane season started June 1 and ended yesterday. Here are the final numbers - there were 17 named tropical storms in the Atlantic Basin this year with ten of those becoming hurricanes. Six were classified as a major hurricane with sustained winds of at least 111 miles per hour. Hurricane Harvey made landfall on August 25 near Rockport as a Category 4, causing widespread flooding as it moved through Southeast Texas into Louisiana. From Friday, August 25, through Wednesday, August 30, Hurricane Harvey dumped a total of 41.75 inches of rain on the City of Liberty.
Tax Conspiracy: A 69-year-old Liberty woman has pleaded guilty to a federal tax violation in the Eastern District of Texas. U.S. Attorney Brit Featherston reports Maria Lilia Riggs pleaded guilty Tuesday to a federal criminal charge of conspiracy to defraud the United States by impeding and obstructing the Internal Revenue Service in the collection of income taxes. Under federal statutes, Mrs. Riggs faces up to five years in federal prison at sentencing as well as restitution to the IRS of approximately $521,166. A sentencing hearing will be scheduled after the completion of a presentence investigation by the U.S. Probation Office.
Nunsense: The Valley Players local theatre group will present a hilarious yuletide musical comedy. “Nuncrackers: the Nunsense Christmas Musical” is one of six sequels to the original “Nunsense” written by Dan Goggins. The shows chronicle the misadventures of a group of nuns known as the Little Sisters of Hoboken. The Valley Player’s performances of “Nuncrackers” are Friday and Saturday, December 8 and 9, at 7 p.m. with a matinee on Sunday, December 10, at 2:30 p.m. All performances are at the Humphreys-Burson Theater, 1710 Sam Houston in Liberty. Tickets are $10. For reservations, call 936-336-6699.
