Grand Parkway: Long talked about, it’s inching closer to reality. That’s the Grand Parkway section soon to be coming through Liberty County. The Grand Parkway – also known as S.H. 99 - is a proposed 180-plus mile circumferential highway traversing seven Texas counties and encircling the Greater Houston region. The project has been shown on governmental planning documents since the early 1960's. Now, TxDOT is preparing to break ground in Liberty County during the second quarter of 2018 for the latest segments from US59N to US90 to I-10E and then to S.H. 146 – that would continue the circular roadway thru Montgomery, Harris, Liberty and Chambers counties and then back into Harris County. Liberty County Judge Jay Knight said the Grand Parkway will bring population growth and enhance economic development here in Liberty County. Based on current projections, planners now say vehicles will be traveling the new section of roadway sometime in 2022.
Holiday Closings: This Thursday is Thanksgiving, and the Liberty County Courthouse will close for the holiday at noon tomorrow and remain closed through Friday. Liberty City Hall will be open for regular hours on Wednesday but will be closed Thursday and Friday. The City of Cleveland closes at 3 p.m. tomorrow while Dayton city offices close at noon tomorrow. Both Dayton and Cleveland city offices will be closed Thursday and Friday. Garbage service in Liberty, Dayton and Cleveland will not run on Thursday, but regular garbage pick up will resume Friday. Also banks and post offices will be closed Thanksgiving Day only, and reopen for regular hours on Friday.
Jingle Bell Ball: The Liberty Elks Lodge is gearing up for its 12th Annual Jingle Bell Ball on Saturday, Dec. 2. This is a free Christmas celebration for physically and mentally challenged children and adults at the Elk’s Lodge on FM 563. Organizers are registering these challenged participants in advance to make sure Christmas gifts can be purchased for them. Each participant can bring up to two guests. The deadline to signup is Nov. 30. Due to limited space, only the first 200 reservations will be accepted. To register, call Margie Powell at 936-334-2678.
Obituaries: Patsy Ruth “Punkin” Murphy O'Neill, 63, of Liberty. Service is 2 p.m. Wednesday at Faith & Family.
