Country Christmas: The annual Country Christmas celebration in Liberty is a week from tomorrow – that’s Tuesday, Nov. 28, in downtown Liberty. A free holiday celebration for the entire family, festivities start with the lighted parade at 6 p.m. Then it’s an evening filled with holiday cheer on the grounds at Liberty City Hall and inside the Liberty Center. There will be pictures with Santa Claus, moonwalks, train rides, wagon rides, cookies, entertainment, holiday music and face painting. Again, it’s all free. The Liberty High School senior class food booth is the only place where you can spend money. For more information on Country Christmas in Liberty, call the Liberty-Dayton Area Chamber at 936-336-5736. To sign up for the lighted parade, call Liberty City Hall by Wednesday at 936-336-3684. The Country Christmas celebration in Dayton is set for Saturday, Dec. 2, from 4 to 8:30 p.m. in the Dayton Community Center.
Thanksgiving Meals: Several area churches are hosting free Thanksgiving meals for the community this Thursday. Trinity Baptist Church invites everyone to their free communitywide Thanksgiving dinner from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday. Trinity Baptist is located on FM 1960 across from Thrif-tee Food Center in Dayton. Also serving free Thanksgiving meals are members of St. Miles Missionary Baptist Church on Highway 90 in Ames. That’s Thursday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thanksgiving Dinner is also being hosted by Valley Community Bible Church on North San Jacinto Street in Liberty from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday.
Football Playoffs: The Liberty Panthers and East Chambers Buccaneers have advanced to the Area round of the state football playoffs. The 9-2 Liberty Panthers face the 10-1 Salado Eagles this Saturday. Kickoff in that Class 4A post-season matchup is 7 p.m. at Merill Green Stadium in Bryan. As for East Chambers, the 7-3 Buccaneers take on the Teague Lions at 9-2 overall. That Class 3A playoff game is Friday at 7 p.m. at Woodforest Bank Stadium in Shenandoah. Recapping the Bi-District round from over the weekend, Liberty beat Shepherd 31-28 Friday on a last-second, 29-yard field goal off the foot of Jesus Landeverde. East Chambers advanced by knocking off Buna 35-12. In other playoff action from over the weekend, Madisonville beat Hardin-Jefferson 42-20. Carthage bested Huffman-Hargrave 46-10 while Port Neches-Groves topped Crosby 72-69.
