McCarty’s Seat: Mike McCarty was removed as Pct. 1 Liberty County Commissioner back in May during a civil suit following a separate criminal trial in which he was convicted on two Class B misdemeanor counts of Abuse of Official Capacity. The judge in the civil case removed McCarty from office and then, with help from County Judge Jay Knight, appointed Bruce Karbowski as interim commissioner. McCarty has appealed his conviction. With the candidate filing period for the March 2018 Primary Election under way, the question has been raised about whether McCarty’s vacated commissioner seat should be put on the primary ballot. Liberty County Attorney Matthew Poston says no, at least not yet. After consulting with state election officials in Austin, Poston said as long as the possibility still exists that McCarty could regain the seat in the appeals process, no other candidates can file to run for that office.

Pipeline: A Tulsa-based company has plans to construct a 20-mile natural gas liquids pipeline in Liberty County. ONEOK Communications Consultant Becky Carver said in an email that the pipeline will transport up to 150,000 barrels per day to EnLink Midstream’s Cajun-Sibon system near Mont Belvieu. Construction on the 16-inch pipeline is scheduled to begin in the second quarter 2018 and be completed in the fall of 2018.
