Jenny’s Law: Another new Texas law that took effect on Sept. 1 was drafted by State Sen. John Whitmire of Houston. It places restrictions on the practice of jailing a witness in a criminal case to insure they will testify. The incident that inspired what is called Jenny’s Law took place in Harris County when a mentally ill, sexual assault victim was put in jail for nearly a month to insure her testimony against the alleged serial rapist who attacked her. The woman was attacked again in jail. Liberty County District Attorney Logan Pickett said he understands the reasoning behind holding witnesses for their testimony, though the ends do not always justify the means. The new law requires a detained witness be appointed an attorney and their detainment hearings must be held in open court. Also, no detained witness can be held for more than 15 days without a rehearing.

Time Change: Daylight Savings Time comes to an end early this Sunday morning, and clocks need to be set back one hour. Remember the old adage - fall back in the fall, spring forward in the spring. So, set clocks back one hour for a return to Standard Time this Sunday at 2 a.m. to manually make the change. Better yet, just set your clocks back one hour before going to bed Saturday night. Also, experts agree it’s a good time to change batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Football: It’s the next to last week of the high school football regular season before playoffs begin for those teams advancing to post season. Next week, both Liberty and Dayton have a bye or open week, so tonight’s games are the final regular season contests for both teams. Dayton is home against Caney Creek at 7 p.m. today. Liberty hosts West Orange-Stark at 7:30. Anahuac travels to Hardin for a 7:30 kickoff while Hull-Daisetta is home versus Burkeville. Barbers Hill has the week off. On kshn.com, just look for your team’s logo under the word Teamline, at the bottom of our homepage. Those listening to Liberty and Dayton on FM 99.9 – remember - Panther fans should tune your stereo balance control to the left while Dayton supporters can listen to the Broncos on the right side.
