No Texting & Driving: As of Sept. 1, Texas joined 46 other states in enacting a statewide ban against texting while driving. The law is intended to cut down on distracted driving by making texting behind the wheel a Class C Misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $200. The only behavior the law specifically targets is typing and or reading text messages on the phone while operating a motor vehicle. The law still allows drivers to make and receive calls on their phones.

Nichols on Sunset Commission: Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick recently appointed State Senator Robert Nichols to serve his third term on the Texas Sunset Advisory Commission. Nichols represents Senate District 3, which includes Liberty County plus 18 other counties in East Texas. Through the Sunset Commission, the Texas Legislature looks closely at the need for and performance of state agencies. About 130 entities are subject to Sunset review, with 20 to 30 going through the process every two years. Senator Nichols said the work done by the commission is essential for ensuring transparency, accountability and efficiency in the state's government.

Shred It: The City of Liberty’s next free Shred it Day is this Saturday. A commercial bonded document shredding company will at Liberty City Hall - this time on the Travis Street side, from 9 a.m. to noon. They will professionally shred on site and then dispose of old credit card statements, tax records, outdated financial statements, computer disks or any other type of personal material. This service is free to everyone and is being held on the Travis Street side of Liberty City Hall because of an expected large funeral service across the street at the Catholic Church that is anticipated to need the city’s parking lot. You do not have to be a Liberty resident to have your sensitive materials shredded at no charge this Saturday.
