TVE: Tonight is Family Night at the 109th Trinity Valley Exposition Fair and Rodeo. It’s free admission today with gates opening at 5 p.m. Parking is $5. The Ranch Rodeo gets under way at 7 tonight in the 4,000 seat covered arena. The carnival will also be open this evening, though tickets for rides are separate and can be purchased on site. Tomorrow’s TVE activities begin with the Kiddie Trailride. It gets under way at 8 a.m. on the Pickett Ranch on State Highway 146 at the corner of FM 1011. As the Kiddie Trailride moves along, it joins the TVE Opening Day Parade for a 10 a.m. start. The parade travels south on Main Street past the courthouse before turning west on Sam Houston. For those who can’t be there for tomorrow morning’s TVE Opening Day Parade, KSHN will broadcast the action from our traditional location on the east side of the courthouse.
Airport: In spite of the floodwaters Hurricane Harvey brought to the area, the City of Liberty has wrapped up some long planned drainage work at Liberty Municipal Airport. Liberty City Manager Gary Broz said correcting the problem of standing water between the city airport’s runway and aircraft taxiway means the way will be clear for future airport improvement projects and runway extension. A Texas Department of Transportation grant will cover most of the airport drainage work. Next is a planned extension of the city airport runway to one mile in length. Mr. Broz said TxDOT grant funds may also be available for that project.
Detwiler Golf Tourney: The Seventh Annual Shane Detwiler Foundation Golf Tournament is this Thursday at Eagle Pointe Golf Club in Mont Belvieu. It was statewide news back on July 13, 2009, when Chambers County Sheriff’s Deputy Detwiler was murdered while responding to an emergency call. Proceeds from Thursday’s event benefit the Shane Detwiler Foundation. The tourney is a four-person scramble. Cost is $125 a person or $500 for a team of four. To sign up as a golfer or to become a sponsor, call Cheryl Railsback at 832-556-9760. You can also learn more online at or on Facebook – just search for the Shane Detwiler Foundation.
Obituaries: Franklin D. “Franky” Neuman, 78, formerly of Dayton. Service is 10 a.m. Friday at PSFH – Dayton.
