Weekend Shooting: A 30-year-old Houston man has been charged with Deadly Conduct after a Saturday morning shooting on County Road 331 in northwest Liberty County. Sheriff’s Captain Ken DeFoor said Ruben Torres-Guerra was shooting a tree with a .45 semi-automatic pistol when he accidentally shot 46-year-old Jose Ramirez of Houston. Captain DeFoor said that bullet went through Mr. Ramirez’s right arm and into his abdomen. The victim, said to be in critical condition, was transported by ground ambulance to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston. At last report, Torres-Guerra remains in Liberty County Jail will bail set at $12,000.
Drug Arrest: Two Liberty County residents were jailed Thursday following a traffic stop in the Knight’s Forest area. A Liberty County Sheriff’s Drug Interdiction unit stopped a four-wheeler and a pickup that was following it around 10:45 p.m. Thursday. The ATV was driven by 41-year-old Thomas Arthur Lambert while the truck’s driver is identified as Chelsea Lane Glover, age 24. During the stop, it was learned that Glover did not have a valid driver’s license. A subsequent search of the pickup revealed a plastic bag containing 3.43 grams of what’s believed to be methamphetamine. Chelsea Glover was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance while Thomas Lambert was arrested on a Revocation of Probation Warrant.
Football: In Friday night football action, Barbers Hill topped Dayton 28-26. Barbers Hill improves to 3-2 on the season while Dayton is now 2-3. Both teams are 2-2 in district. Turning to Liberty, the Panthers improved to 4-1 on the season with a 48-14 road win over Tarkington. Also over the weekend, Westbury Academy rolled over Hull-Daisetta 42-0. Jasper topped Hardin-Jefferson 35-17, and West Hardin thrashed Acadiana Christian 57-18. Cleveland shut out Kashmere 35-0. On Thursday, Class 3A Hardin varsity topped Class 5A Port Neches-Groves JV 20-6. Both Anahuac and East Chambers had an open week.
