H-D ISD: When the Hull-Daisetta Elementary building was damaged by flood water, the district had to throw out teaching and school supplies inside the building, too. With that in mind, district officials say the community could help in a big way by making financial donations to help replace these items. Those interested can drop off a check designated for recovery aid to the superintendent’s office at the Hull-Daisetta School District’s administration office. The district could also use gift cards to either Walmart or Amazon. For more information, call the Hull-Daisetta School District at 936-536-6321.
Park Party: The community is invited to the 19th Annual City Park Party this Saturday from 3 to 8 p.m. at Liberty Municipal Park. The Rev. Delmar Lee Coward Jr said the day’s events are always free, a gift from Vision Ministry and Cornerstone Church. He said there will be plenty of food and lots of activities for all ages. They will also be giving away gift cards, bikes, food and backpacks. It’s free fun for all ages - in the truest sense, a wonderful family outing. Delmar said, thanks to a ministry in Longview, there will also be an 18-wheel, tractor-trailer full of non-perishable food items plus household cleaning supplies. Those will be handed out free as well. For more information, visit their website at
Refuge Closed: The Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge will be closed to the public until at least September 15 due to widespread flooding. However, Refuge Manager Stuart Marcus said the refuge office on FM 1011 in Liberty is open. The period for accepting hunt applications has been extended to this Saturday, September 9. All applications should be postmarked by that date. Also, the National Public Lands Clean Up event is cancelled. Severe flooding of the popular Champion Lake Public Use Area located at the end of CR 417 may cause an extended closure of that area because of possible levee damage and road culvert issues. For more information, call the Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge Office at 936-336-9786.
Obituaries: Jerry Lynn Rives, 58, of Hardin. Service is 10 a.m. Friday at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Cleveland. Sharron Martin, 74, of Dayton. Service is 10 a.m. Saturday at Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton.
