Volume 32, No. 163 Tuesday, August 29, 2017
Evacuations & Curfews: Liberty County Judge Jay Knight has issued a mandatory evacuation order for all the low-lying unincorporated areas of the county along the river. He also established a curfew from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily until further notice. The City of Liberty has called for a voluntary evacuation of Travis Park, Oakforest and the South Liberty Oilfield. The cities of Liberty, Dayton and Daisetta have all also established a curfew for those same hours – 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily.
School Closings: All school districts in Liberty and Chambers counties have once again canceled classes and student activities for at least today. However, some of the local school districts have already made decisions for later in the week as well. The Dayton, Liberty, Hull-Daisetta, Cleveland, Tarkington, Anahuac and East Chambers school districts have canceled classes all week and students will return to school Tuesday, Sept. 5. Those districts have also canceled student activities, including football and volleyball, until next Tuesday. The Devers and Hardin school districts will be closed both today and tomorrow. Barbers Hill will be closed today and continue to evaluate the situation. School officials at all of the districts in Liberty and Chambers counties say they will continue to monitor weather conditions and flooding, and will make additional decisions on closings as warranted for the safety of students and district employees.
Government Closings: The Liberty County Courthouse and all non-emergency county offices will be closed today. City of Liberty offices will be open today, but the library will be closed. LTs garbage service will not run. Dayton City Hall, Dayton Municipal Court and the Dayton Community Center will be open today. Waste Management will not collect trash today.
Emergency Shelters: The Liberty County Office of Emergency Management has announced five shelters have been opened in Liberty County. However, one is at full capacity – that’s First United Methodist Church of Liberty. Those shelters that are open and accepting those who are displaced include First Baptist Church, 602 Main Street in Liberty, plus North Main Baptist Church, 4709 North Main. There is also one open shelter on the north end of the county. It’s at Calvary Baptist Church, 816 North Blair Street in Cleveland. For those in eastern Liberty County, the Hull-Daisetta gym has opened its doors. Because Red Cross has not yet arrived in Liberty County, those shelters are operating on a self-sufficiency situation.
