School Closings: All school districts in Liberty and Chambers counties have canceled classes and student activities for today. Some of the local school districts have already made decisions for later in the week as well. Both the Dayton and Cleveland school districts have canceled classes all week and will return to school Tuesday, Sept. 5. As for Tarkington ISD, they will be closed today, tomorrow and Wednesday. Three local school districts – Liberty, Anahuac and Barbers Hill – will be closed today and tomorrow. The other four school districts in Liberty and Chambers counties will be closed today. Those include Hull-Daisetta, Hardin, Devers and East Chambers. School officials at all of the districts in Liberty and Chambers counties say they will continue to monitor weather conditions and flooding, and they will make additional decisions on closings as warranted for the safety of students and district employees.
Government Closings: The Liberty County Courthouse and all non-emergency county offices will be closed today. The trial set for the 75th District Court of Judge Mark Morefield will not begin today as scheduled. Therefore, potential jurors who received a summons do not need to report to the 75th District Court today. Dayton City Hall, Dayton Municipal Court and the Dayton Community Center will be closed today.
Emergency Shelters: The Liberty County Office of Emergency Management has announced two shelters have been opened in Liberty County. One is in the south end of the county. It is at First United Methodist Church, 539 Main Street in Liberty. The other shelter is on the north end of the county. It’s at Calvary Baptist Church, 816 North Blair Street in Cleveland
Hotel Tax Waiver: Texas Governor Greg Abbott has suspended the collection of all state and local hotel occupancy taxes for people affected by Hurricane Harvey. The tax waiver is for a period beginning last Wednesday and continuing through Wednesday, September 6. The tax waiver applies to those with a home address in the counties the governor declared a disaster area. The waiver also applies to relief workers dispatched to an impacted area.
