County Auditor: Liberty County Commissioners met in a brief regular session Monday. One item on the agenda was the reappointment of County Auditor Wayne Gott. Texas law requires district judges to select the county auditor to maintain a separation between the one who watches the books for the county and those who pay that person’s salary. The two Liberty County district judges, Chap Cain and Mark Morefield, not only make the appointment but also set the auditor’s salary. In this case, the county auditor’s new salary will be $117,234, up slightly from last year when it was set at $113,820. That’s a 2.99% increase.
Dayton Annexation: Dayton City Council met Monday and took the first step in a new property annexation plan. Dayton City Planner Kimberly Judge showed an annexation map to council that will ultimately add another 3,200 acres to the city’s limits. The proposed annexation is broken up into four separate areas, all either very near or adjacent to the path of the Grand Parkway - I-99 through Liberty County. Dayton City Council approved scheduling two required public hearings on the proposed annexation - Tuesday, Sept. 5, and Monday, Sept. 18.
Magnolia Place: We have reported ongoing plans by Magnolia Place Health Care in Liberty to build a new, more spacious facility in Liberty. As of a few weeks ago, the local skilled nursing facility’s owners have closed on ownership of an 8 acre tract in the north Liberty area to build the all new Magnolia Place Health Care. Administrator Adam Ott said the new building will replace the current one providing much more room for each resident. A construction timeline has not been finalized.
