Tax Rates: Dayton City Council met Monday and voted to drop the city’s tax rate from the current 68 cents per $100 of assessed property value to 67 cents. On Tuesday, Liberty County Commissioners voted to set the county’s tax rate for the upcoming fiscal year at 57.88 cents per $100 value. That is the same rate the county has adopted for the past three years.
Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday: The very popular annual back-to-school sales tax holiday starts at 12:01 a.m. tomorrow and continues through midnight Sunday. Texas Comptroller Glen Hegar reports the three-day period offers shoppers in Texas a chance to save money on certain back-to-school items that are priced under $100. Those tax-free items include most children’s and adults’ clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks. Many retailers also offer special sales during the period, giving shoppers a chance to save even more. Lists of apparel and school supplies that are tax-free can be found on the Texas Comptroller’s website – you can link there from, just click on the government tab under local information.
Medicare: Questions about Medicare, the country’s healthcare program for those 65 and over, usually concern the different parts of the Medicare Program. Andy Hardwick, with the Social Security Administration in Houston, said Americans will be signed up for Parts A and B automatically when they reach age 65. Dayton Youth Sports: Dayton Youth Sports Association is currently holding online signups for fall baseball and softball. That online signup is for players 3 to 8 years old. In addition, there are two upcoming in-person registration events – one is August 26 and the other is September 9th. Both are from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Daniel Park on FM 1008 in Dayton.
